Unit 6 – WORD STATE

Tutors: Kasia Korczak and Zak Kyes

WORD STATE is a design research project interested in the social, political and cultural use of words in public space. Our main focus is London as a graphic/information space. Word State considers the presence and use of words in public (from advertising to conceptual interventions to posters) significant as a catalyst to London’s cultural and architectural future. Word State will begin by asking what role words play in representing public space and will conclude with a site-specific intervention somewhere in London. Through researching disparate sites participants will develop critical and symbolic design strategies, manifested as a series of B/W A1 posters, that question the current role of words in public space. Participants will work in small groups to research/document sites, write minifestos based on observations and to document a final project.
