STORIES FROM THE CITY

“Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

As construction remains stagnant following the global-economic-meltown, fabrication of an entirely other kind – one of stories – is implanting itself firmly within our architectural culture and tools of production. Architecture fiction enables the construction of new worlds in contrast to urban, cultural and political realities. This year’s AA Summer Architecture School will focus its attention on the narratives of London; from the mini-dramas unfolding on its congested sidewalks, to the fantastical fictions re-imagining a city’s many alternate realities.

The Summer Architecture School will suspend belief through a number of compelling perspectives: spatial, social, economic, ecological, cultural and technological. It will employ London as an experimental laboratory of ideas and actions. Individual and collective discoveries are encouraged as well as innovative, evocative proposals. The brief and intense course—based on the renowned AA Unit System—emphasises techniques of interpretation, recording, drawing, making and thinking through diverse media types, both analogue and digital.
